Study of some ferromagnetic II-IV-V2 systems and of their interfaces with non-ferromagnetic semiconductors
Our goal is to carry out a detailed and systematic investigation of two systems in the magnetic II-IV-V2 chalcopyrites family, ZnSnSb2 (Mn, Fe, Co) and MnGeSb2 and interrogate their interfaces with Si and III-V conventional semiconductors for spin injection capabilities. Research on transition metal doping effects on the system ZnSnSb2 and synthesis and characterization of the system MnGeSb2 prove the novelty of this project. Ferromagnetic II-IV-V2 thin film growth onto technologically relevant semiconductor substrates will be done using Pulsed Laser Deposition to produce different interfaces with specific properties (e.g. interdiffusion length, buried depth etc) and hence specificity in the mechanisms governing the stability, electric transport and magnetic phenomena at the nanoscale. Parameters, such as substrate temperature and ambient atmosphere that influence the quality of the resulting film will be addressed and optimised. We aim at setting up a complete suite of characterisation methods to study the interfaces of the nano-films on various substrates. The exploitation of the results of the project is aimed at attracting industrial interest for implementing decisive knowledge for new applications. The project leader will be trained in a full research programme, also through interaction with teams playing a leading role in at European level, in a multidisciplinary environment.
